Cooking with Kids

Lesson 3: Measuring Up

Parent Tips

Notice in the lesson how we clean the saucepan before proceding. One of the great results of teaching a young child how to cook is that they will develop great kitchen habits - like cleaning while you go along. This makes cooking a lot more fun. You don't end on a down note like having to deal with a huge pile of dirty dishes. It also means that if you need to reuse something, you don't have to stop at a bad time to wash it.

Cleaning as you go is an especially important tip if you have more than one child in the kitchen at the same time. One child may need some tool that the other one just used.

Here's another good tip when there's more than one cook. If someone is carrying a hot pot or sharp knife behind the other cook - make sure the one doing the carrying says loudly, "hot" or "sharp". That way, one cook won't spin around and get stabbed or burned.
