Lesson 1: Media for Walls and Hard Surfaces - Beyond the Usual

Airbrush

Airbrushes are tools, rather than paint media, but I am including them here simply because an air brush is a neater alternative to spray paint. It's just that the spray paint can comes complete with paint, while with an airbrush you have to fill it and then clean it. Still, they give you more control than spray paint without as much problem with overspray.

They are worth the investment if you plan to do a lot of murals and large scale painting - although it is also an airbrush that many manicurists use to do those tiny designs on fingernails. With an airbrush complicated shading and highlighting becomes quite simple, and large areas of a stencil can be filled in quickly. The main thing to remember is that the equipment must be very thoroughly cleaned after each color and each use.

Air brush paints aren't available in the wide array of colors that ordinary stencil paints are, but once you become adept at mixing your own colors (which every stenciler eventually does, whether out of necessity or just because we love to play with color) this isn't too dreadful a limitation.
