Lesson 3: Thematic Springboards Part I: Subject Unit Study Ideas3-7 Bible/Spiritual3-7 Spiritual/Character Building The same TV series, which became a passion of hers for several years, also gave us opportunities for character and biblical studies as well as history and more computer technology. The main characters possessed widely varying character traits, so we made a personality study by charting each character's strengths and weaknesses, seeing how their traits effected their actions and relationships with one another. While the series was not Christian, the characters were each striving to accomplish noble goals. We studied scripture verses which exemplified what they were trying to do, or showing why they sometimes failed, or even why what they were trying to do was not based on sound principles. The series also involved a lot of political and military intrigue with many 17th & 18th century European influences. We delved into the history of the period which gave Jen a much deeper appreciation of the background to her show. Eventually, she flew off on her own historical and scientific studies to help create one of the most in-depth and highest-rated websites dealing with the series. My first article – actually pair of articles -- for Christian Home Education was on character studies based largely on Biblical references. For more depth on this topic please see: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/chri... Section XVII in our textbook has excellent ideas for relating biblical material to various subjects helping to show that our spiritual life has relevance to all areas of living and studying.
