Lesson 6: Alternative & Complementary Medicine

Nutrition & Special Diets

A macrobiotic diet tries to achieve balance in your body through the Oriental principles of ying and yang. The foods favored are grains and vegetables, with beans, fruits, fish and fowl used as adjunct sources of nutrition. Some of these diets lack essential vitamins and proteins. Again, check with your doctor. Some of the quantities of these foods may interact with your medications or treatments. http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/PPI/Unconventi...

MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas is my reference for most of this section. Excuse the abundance of links to their site, but their information in much more complete. Better still, they have (or currently) researched most of the programs listed.

The GERSON diet is based on the balance of sodium and potassium water management, high doses of fruits and vegetable juices, strict restriction of protein intake, as well as use of a vegetarian diet and coffee enemas. Side effects can include strong body odor, cold sores, pain, fever, cramping, diarrhea, vomiting. Please check this out carefully if you are inclined in this direction. http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/PPI/Unconventi...
