Lesson 7: Follow up

Keeping Track

Any organized and successful job hunter keeps a chart or record of all resumes sent out, which one, what cover letter, to whom, when, calls, interviews, outcomes, dates, etc.

Keep a copy of the cover letter, resume and any other correspondence to a potential employer in the same order as your chart – separate by a coloured sheet for easy retrieval when you get a call back.

But remember, it’s up to you to fill in the blanks, and this chart is only as good as you filling it out truthfully. This also helps if you are receiving monetary assistance of any kind (EI here in Canada), where you may be asked at any time to provide a list of employers you have contacted.

More importantly, it gives you a quick way to keep a handle on who to call and when, and ALWAYS put in the information you’ve collected on how to improve.

Getting the interview is the success. You will not always fit into the culture of a perceived “dream job”; but persistence will pay off. Generally, if you’ve done the real research on a company and decide they are for you – then you WILL fit into the culture – now go prove it to them!
