Lesson 2: What everyone is or should be talking about: Water

Your first piece of advice as a potential manager

Now that you are a knowledgeable, potential water resources manager, we need some initial advice from you.

The Earth's water cycle (also knows as the hydrologic cycle) is nicely depicted at

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycleg...

Take a good look at the diagram, then carry out this advisory assignment: ---------- Geologists from a large mining consortium have confirmed sizeable deposits of Gold (Au), on a hill-slope area. After buying out the natives who had titles to the land, they have requested a license to extract the Gold. They state that as the mining site will be sufficiently far away from open running water (streams, lakes), there is no need for further environmental impact assessments. The mining will be localized and all, if any pollution can be contained on site.

You are the county environmental impact assessment officer and are expected to produce an official answer to the request (approval or rejection, giving reasons – just a short 100 – 200 word paragraph!).

Return your assessment to your course instructor before moving on to the next section!!
