Lesson 1: Lesson 1: What is ADHD?

Homework

HOMEWORK:

1. Read as much as you can about ADHD. The books recommended can be extremely important in better understanding this disorder. The more you understand, the better you will be able to respond and cope with your situation.

2. Start making a list of all the talents, special gifts, and wonderful things that make up your child! Add to this list every day! Start telling your child about them!

3. In order to make changes, we need to become aware of where we are right now, what things need to be changed and what is already succeeding. In preparation for putting in place behavioral management skills, spend a week filling out a behavioral management diary. You can use the attached sample or make up your own. In the attached sample, under the column heading Event, when, what and where did this occur. Under column heading Your Response put what you did or said in response to the event, and under the column heading Result indicate whether you accomplished what you wanted to accomplish.

What is important is becoming aware of patterns of behavior and interaction between you and your child. What works? What doesn’t work? Am I always in a battle with my child that ends up in a continual power struggle? Do I constantly feel angry and respond in anger to my child? Is my child becoming more and more rebellious and angry?
