Golfing
The climate on Vancouver Island is perfect for golfing all year round. Even in the winter, golfers can enjoy the links because there are infrequent snowfalls and the ground does not freeze. The average winter temperature is 46 degrees F. There are 52 golf courses on Vancouver Island with the majority of them being on the eastern and southern shores. The wide variety of terrain and the gorgeous scenery make the courses challenging, yet enjoyable.
Here is a list of the golf courses in the Victoria area:
Cordova Bay Golf Course
5333 Cordova Bay Road Victoria
Built in 1991, this course is relatively new compared to many of the other courses in the area. Well-known golf course architect Bill Robinson designed this 18-hole championship course.
The Ridge Course
5300 Cordova Bay Road Victoria,
Located next to Cordova Bay Course, this is a new and unique 18-hole grass-putting course. The beautifully manicured greens offer an opportunity for novice and pro golfers to practice putting.
Cedar Hill Municipal Golf Course
1400 Derby Road, Victoria
This is one of the oldest courses on the Island. It was first built as a 9-hole course in the 1920s and then expanded to 18 holes in the 1950s. Although it's not a large course, it presents a lot of good challenges, even for the more expert golfer.
Glen Meadows Golf & Country Club
1050 McTavish Rd. Victoria
Built in 1965, this 18-hole course is known to be challenging, yet playable for all levels of expertise. Tennis courts and a curling rink have been added in order to offer visitors a variety of sport activities.
Gorge Vale Golf Club
1005 Craigflower Rd. Victoria
Centrally located to the downtown area, this 18-hole course has a driving range and full-fledged clubhouse along with snack bar and coffee shop. The terrain is hilly and can be challenging.
Prospect Lake Golf Course
4633 Prospect Lake Rd. Victoria
Suited for beginner and experienced golfers, this course is on the southern shore of Prospect Lake in a quiet rural area. The 9 holes are designed for all levels of expertise with narrow fairways and deep sand bunkers.
Uplands Golf Course
3300 Cadboro Bay Rd. Victoria
Located on a hill way above the city, this private golf course was founded in the 1920s. The grounds are well maintained by expert groundskeepers. The lush forest surrounding the course offers privacy and beautiful surroundings.
Juan De Fuca Golf Course
1767 Island Highway, Victoria
Once the site of a horseracing track, this course is well groomed and has several water and tree hazards. Many of the greens are sloped so putting can be a challenge. The clubhouse has a large banquet room for corporate or group functions and a restaurant for golfers who want a meal after a game.
Royal Colwood Golf and Country Club
629 Goldstream Ave. Victoria
Ranked number 6 in the best courses in Canada, this challenging course was built in 1931. It is heavily treed with Douglas Firs and Garry Oaks. Over the years, many celebrities and famous sports figures have chosen this majestic course for a round of golf.
Victoria Golf Club
110 Beach Drive Victoria
This is the 2nd oldest course in North America and is a Scottish links-style seaside course. Being next to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, golfers content with occasional high winds and a rocky coastline, but also enjoy a magnificent view. This is truly an experience that's worth the price.
Royal Oak Golf Course
540 Marsett Place, Victoria
Conveniently located to downtown Victoria, this 9-hole executive course has some challenging holes. Due to a redesign around a housing development, there are places where there is not much rough.
Ardmore Golf Course
930 Ardmore Drive Sidney
The public is accepted on a first come, first served basis. This 9-hole course is bordered by Douglas Fir and offers a beautiful layout.
Metchosin Golf Club
4100 Metchosin Rd, Metchosin
Golfers will enjoy the reasonable green fees at this public 9-hole course. Built in the 1960's it is surrounded by woodland in this mainly rural area. This golf club has gained popularity for its Monday morning fun tournaments.
Green Acres Golf Club
3970 Metchosin Road, Metchosin
Located in the middle of farmland, this picturesque 9-hole course gives golfers a great view of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. The fairways are not extremely long, but the elevated greens are a challenge.
Olympic View Golf Club
643 Latoria Rd. Sooke
This has become one of Canada's prestigious golf courses with 12 lakes and two waterfalls surrounded by forest. The clubhouse has banquet facilities along with free shuttle service from the ferries and major hotels. On a clear day, golfers have a breathtaking view of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State.
