Whale Watching

The southern tip of Vancouver Island is one of the three best areas for whale watching. The other two areas are the Pacific Rim and the northeast coast. The migration season is from April to October so this is when the whale activity is at its best. The black and white Orcas live in the Georgia Strait. Tours originate from Victoria, Sidney and Sooke. Pacific Gray whales migrate up the coast from Baja Mexico in March and April to their feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. The best place to view these whales is along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and western Vancouver Island. Visitors can also see Humpback whales and other species. Most of the tour boats have submergible microphones so the passengers can hear the whales vocalize. On the way out to the see the whales, people may see Harbour Seals, California Sea Lions and Sea Otters.
