Lesson 5: Parks & Beaches

Port Renfrew

Botanical Beach Provincial Park
4 km past Port Renfrew
To get to this beautiful beach, visitors must take a rough gravel road that starts behind the Port Renfrew Hotel. The beach is composed of granite and sandstone with many potholes that resemble honeycombs. The tidal pools in the potholes are home to many fascinating sea creatures, which can be observed at close range. Out to sea, the grey whales swim by during migration season in April and October. The only time to visit this beach is during low tide.

Red Creek Fir
North of Pt Renfrew
Here is the largest Douglas Fir tree in Canada and it is believed to be over 900 years old. The circumference is 41 feet and 241 feet tall. At one time, the tree was believed to be 320 feet tall but lost some of the top branches over the years due lighting or wind. Despite logging operations and storms in the area, this magnificent tree has survived.
Fairy Lake Forest Recreation Site
Harris Creek Mainl Logging Road
This lake is crowded on the weekends in the summer. It is popular for swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and trail bike riding. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy the lake due to its large size (82 acres) and abundance of fish. There are campsites available, but they are not serviced.
Lizard Lake
Harris Creek Main Logging Road
This area around the lake it is mainly used for camping. It is maintained by the BC Forest Service and is open from May to September. The lake has an area of 22 acres and is 50 feet deep in some areas.
