Lesson 2: About Victoria and District Municipalities

Oak Bay

This popular quaint area lies east of downtown Victoria on the waterfront. It is an older area and many of the buildings were built at the same time as the ones in Victoria. Oak Bay was founded by a group of wealthy families who wanted to live outside the Victoria area. Tree-lined streets compliment expensive heritage homes. The commercial area has tearooms, coffee shops and boutiques. Many people enjoy Oak Bay due to the laid-back lifestyle.

The name came from the Garry Oak, which is a tree unique to Vancouver Island. The streets are lined with these magnificent trees. It makes walking or cycling a pleasant activity and it's encouraged in Oak Bay. The shoreline is lined with walkways, parks and beaches. It is a lovely getaway from the downtown area.
