Lesson 2: About Victoria and District Municipalities

Sooke

Located on the Strait of Juan De Fuca, it is the gateway to the West Coast Road (Hwy 14) that leads to Port Renfrew. Along this highway, there are a string of beaches that offer wonderful views of the Olympic Mountains in Washington. The terrain is mountainous so the coastline can be rugged in parts. Access to some of the beaches requires climbing up and down cliffs. These beaches are unique because they are remote and offer an opportunity to view marine life at its finest. Activities at the beaches include fishing, kayaking, beach combing, hiking and surfing. Salmon fishing is extremely popular at the Sooke Basin.

The village features a museum and one of the largest art shows on the Island. There are several art studios and galleries in the Village who host this event. Sooke is a 45-minute drive from Victoria so it can be easily reached on a day trip.

For more information on Sooke, please look at the British Columbia.com website.
