Lesson 1: Before You Leave Home

Sales Taxes

The GST, or "goods and services tax", is a 7% federal tax which applies to most foods and services provided in Canada. There is also PST or "provincial sales tax" of 7.5% in BC.

Prices quoted on goods and services do not include these 2 taxes. When you pay for these items, the taxes are added on to your bill.

Visitor Tax Rebates
Non-resident visitors to Canada are entitled to a rebate of GST (Goods & Services Tax) on certain goods they take out of Canada as well as short-term accommodations.

Keep your receipts if you wish to apply for a GST rebate. You can pick up a copy of Tax Refund Application for Visitors at any Customs office or most tourism information centers, duty-free shops, department stores and some hotels. As you leave Canada, you must have your receipts validated and your goods inspected. The validation points are at the border crossings and at the Vancouver Airport.
