Lesson 7: Environmental Health Issues Prevention Continued

Envirnomental Health Issues Prevention continues with the discussion of air pollutants, asbestos, mold, sanitation, toxic substances and infestations.

Sanitation (Recycling)

Local Law 19 requires all tenants in every building make sure materials designated for recycling are kept separate from garbage and are properly placed for collection.

  • Buildings with three or more units (apartments) must have at least one recycling collection area that is accessible to tenants.
  • Each collection site must have two clearly labeled containers, one for mixed paper and one for beverage cartons, bottles, cans, foil and metal.
  • Tenants must rinse bottles, cans and foil before placing them in designated containers.
  • Corrugated cardboard must be tied into bundles 18" high or less.
  • If tenants are required to directly place recycle items curbside, signs must include recycle days and any other necessary requirements.
  • Recycle information is provided to any tenant free of charge by calling the Department of Sanitation Recycling Unit at 212-837-8156.
