Prostate CancerLesson 4: Coping with the After-effectsSexual DysfunctionRisk of Sexual Dysfunction (for fully potent men before treatment):
For men who had sexual dysfunction before treatment, the risk of dysfunction after treatment is higher. Because the treatment of cancer in the prostate entails some disruption of the nerves around the prostate, there will be some risk of loss of ability to achieve or maintain an erection and/or produce semen. The risk of loss of sexual function is dependent on the location of the cancer within the prostate, type of treatment, and the skill of your health professionals. Keep in mind that it is the job of the heath professionals to kill or remove the cancer first. In other words, saving your life comes first; saving the nerves is a secondary consideration. The risk of sexual dysfunction should be discussed with your sex partner. Some men suffer from a loss of self-esteem because they feel they cannot fulfill their end of the intercourse partnership. This situation is often made more complex because your partner very likely has gone, or is going, though menopause and may be facing her own problems in regards to sex. Many cancer agencies offer counseling for couples facing these dilemmas. I urge you to take advantage of these services prior to deciding on your treatment so you may be well prepared for this possible after-effect of Prostate Cancer and its treatment. Itβs important to note that there are treatments available for all types of sexual dysfunction, including Viagra and other medications. There are also physical means of getting and maintaining an erection. Viagra is not for everyone. There are reasons why Viagra is not sold over the counter. This may or may not be a fall back position for you. Discuss with your doctor what options are available to you as part of your talks before you settle on a treatment. You and your partner may also require counseling after your treatment as you adjust to the new sexual paradigm. Remember, no matter what anyone may say or infer, you are more than just a penis! |
