Leisure Reading 101

Lesson 6: Being The Backbone Of The Book Club

Maintaining constructive and positive discussions

When the conversation is going nowhere fast because the members are harshly debating the issues of the book, you need to step in and take charge. How to do this and not be labeled a bad host or hostess? Use these techniques:

1. Call out both people's names and state that you hear both of their arguments.

2. Then state that you will be the middle ground person and the other members the judges.

3. Ask the opposing parties to state their points of reasoning first in one word.

4. Proceed then to ask the parties to define their word completely and explain their position.

5. Next ask the group to raise their hands if they agree with first one, then the other.

6. Provide your own decision.

7. Then pick two that sided with either side to give their reasons.

This will stop the previous bickering and get you quickly and back on track to enjoying the experience of reading.

Let's proceed to the next exercise:

“Find suitable and enjoyable places to host your club.”
