Leisure Reading 101

Lesson 5: Loving Literature And Sharing It With Others

Lesson exercise to motivational reading

In order to achieve the skill of motivational reading, perform these activities daily or weekly:

1. While reading, make note that the author is trying to relay a message to you. Everyone loves opening a mailbox to find mounds of mail waiting for him or her, even junk mail that gets on our nerves. Having this mindset will make you determined to finish reading and motivate you to enjoy your experience.

2. Use your highlighter to draw attention to the points being raised. Even go a little wild and use vibrant color when you are reading a difficult but required text.

3. Scan the contents of the book or locate a middle part and start there. The table of contents will list the areas of focus and you will then decide which one appeals to you the most. Start with the most interesting selection first and then proceed directly to the least appealing section, leaving till last the sections that are neutral in appeal.

4. Make goals. If you finished five pages in one hour you will get a treat. The treat can be anything you wish. Then proceed with more pages in a sufficient amount of time – rewarding yourself with more elaborate rewards.

Let's proceed to the next exercise:
