Leisure Reading 101Lesson 5: Loving Literature And Sharing It With OthersSharing the Joy of Reading with others How do you perform this rewarding task? Easy. Let's first begin with our children, then proceed to our adult friends and family members. 2. Buy a child a book rather then a toy for his/her birthday or holiday occasion. 3. Make a specific time for a reading session with you and the child. 4. Have a really special place for the reading session. 5. Encourage the child to sit on your lap or cuddle close as you both read the book. Notice I say both of you holding the book: each of you take either side the front cover or back cover. Children love this form of sharing. 6. Read the title of the book to the child and let the child repeat it to you. 7. While reading move your finger along the words. 8. Remember to convey the meaning of the words presented in the book. When a sentence has emotion then you must relay that emotion. This will teach the child the importance of the events the author is presenting. Make sound noises like a car skidding tires down the road, or a bird chirping to relay a message to a character. SHARING WITH ADULT FAMILY MEMBERS & FRIENDS 1. At lunch bring up a discussion on what current book you are reading. This most always works to get people interested in reading or reading in groups for in-depth discussion. 2. As you talk about your book, be very selective in only telling some details that will have them wanting to know more about the book. 3. Trust me that passers-by hear your conversations and will approach you to discuss the book they are currently reading or tell you they would like to read the title you are reading now. Be alert. Smile. Make eye contact and they are sure to get excited about the book. 4. Present other titles of the author to see if the person is familiar with the author’s accomplishments. Here you will continue the discussions leading to an enriching experience of sharing literature with others.
