Leisure Reading 101

Lesson 4: Succeeding With Retention

Bringing the author's message to light

The reader must summarize the previous measures of defining the author’s message or the plot and theme of the book. To do this these steps need to be taken:

1. First, you must try to summarize in one word what that book is about. I know it can be difficult in some books, but try. This is very important especially when you are moderating a live author event or doing book review with your book club. This will also help you develop your vocabulary. The words that the author uses will play greatly here.

2. Then write a 150 word blurb of the direct message the author has stated.

3. Next, write a response of no more than 250 words.

This will develop your literary thinking for the next exercise. Let's proceed to:

“The value of different viewpoints.”
