Leisure Reading 101

Lesson 4: Succeeding With Retention

Grasping the main theme of the plot or message

To achieve this you must complete these steps while reading the book:

1. In fiction, look for the conflict as it unfolds. In in non-fiction the author will lead up to the full argument by laying out several points.

2. You must locate and understand all the players. In fiction, the main ones are usually introduced immediately and then the sub-characters are presented as the story progresses.

3. Get familiar with the characters and learn their strengths and weakness. With non-fiction, you must get to know where the author is coming from. Reading his biography on the back copy or flap will provide you with a bit of a background.

Once these steps are mastered let's proceed to the next exercise to further what we have just covered:

“Bringing the author’s message to light.”
