Lesson 4: Succeeding With Retention

This lesson will review the ways we retain what we read and provide ways of improving your retention. It will outline the principals that need to be in place in order for an individual to relay the message of the literature. This practice will further increase one’s awareness of literature and allow the person to be erudite about fine quality literature.

Why Retention is so important in reading literature

Retaining what you read is important because you must be able to capture the author's purpose in teaching you about a passionate subject and share this understanding with others. It allows you to fully appreciate the literary experience. We must come to terms with the primary focus of the author and reader relationships. It is a form of giving from one to another and both entities must respect one another by fully making an effort to understand both parties' initial cause.

The measures below will help you retain what you have just read.

Ask yourself these questions to get on the path of success in retention:

1. What is the subject? The title, etc.?

2. Who is the author?

3. What were the recurring points the author made throughout the content of the text?

These three questions are easy for you to remember and will encourage your mind to retain more effectively.

Let's proceed to the next exercise:

“Grasping the main theme of the plot or message.”
