Lesson 1: The Joy of Reading

The student will get a view of the wonders of two main categories of literature - fiction and non-fiction. The lesson will have an array of examples from talented authors to provide a wonderful sample of literature to devour and to show the enjoyment of reading.

Introduction to The Joy of Reading

Words are an integral part of our lives; we often choose to use them with care, devotion, and honor. The authors of such words in books present gifts to others. Why do I say gifts? Simple: the power within the author’s soul is filled with their being and exposes a part of their self. The author wishes to share this inner, sacred part of him/herself and how he/she views the world. This leads to a story that moves readers to enter this world and become a part of it. The selective words the author uses brings this world, thought, viewpoint, and style of creativity into being.

Reading can be one of the most challenging things that we as individuals do. Some books are really easy to read while others can be quite difficult -- either because of the author’s viewpoint on a particular issue or the meaning of the unfamiliar words the author is using to convey his/her message. For the most part, reading is a necessity and those big hurdles of in-depth literature must be overcome and devoured during the journey of reading a book. Once this is mastered, the joy of reading is at your fingertips.

A whole new world opens up. Your outlook of life compared to that of other people not of your background or culture will be a joy to explore as well as learn about. The Joy of Reading is just that: to enjoy the experience of reading and allow your mind to expand in thinking in the terms of what is truly being relayed in the book.

An important concept that you must always remember in order to fully gain the concept of The Joy of Reading, is this simple formula:

Reading: for information + understanding = enjoyment of the reading experience

My goal is to help you formulate a successful plan to apply the techniques outlined in this course to help you achieve the finished result: enjoyment of the reading experience while obtaining higher comprehension. There are so many different types of texts with many different author views. At times we must approach a text with certain skills to overcome difficult material; other times the contents are a breeze and we immediately reach the end result. Lesson One will begin by introducing the two main categories of literature; fiction and non-fiction by providing an overview of certain published titles unique style and content.

The thrill of Fiction will showcase some influential literature by some of the best-known authors in the literary world. Also, the benefits of non-fiction will be discussed to show how these literary passages provide bountiful gifts to others by teaching us how to improve our lives. In addition, I will provide a recommended reading section to begin your journey towards enjoying the reading experience.

Lets begin with the first exercise:
