Lesson 5: NEAR-DROWNING

Lesson five will concentrate on near-drowning: a definition and explanation of near-drowning, as well as first aid, complications, and prevention of this potentially fatal condition.

INTRODUCTION TO LESSON 5

In this lesson, we'll be studying near-drowning. Near-drowning is a serious summertime hazard, though it's one that can be prevented in most cases. Near-drowning can occur in pools, ponds, lakes, rivers, oceans, and even a bathtub or bucket of water.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Know what near-drowning is.
  • Know where and how near-drowning occurs.
  • Know what type of information to gather at the scene of a near-drowning.
  • Understand complications that commonly arise from near-drowning.
  • Provide first aid to a near-drowning victim.
  • Employ prevention techniques to minimize the risk of near-drowning.
