Lesson 2: BURNS AND WOUNDS
In this lesson, we'll learn about burns and wounds. For burns: types (degrees) of burns will be explained, as well as symptoms and first aid for burns, and when to seek professional medical care for a burn. For wounds: we'll look at different types of wounds (for example, puncture vs. avulsion), their respective symptoms and first aid, and when to seek emergency medical care for a wound.
INTRODUCTION TO LESSON 2
In this lesson, we’ll be looking at burns and wounds. Burns and wounds are common injuries year-round, but are especially prevalent in the summertime, when most of us are more active, and more prone to the occasional trip on a walking path, or cuts and scrapes acquired while roaming through berry brambles. The US holiday of Independence Day, on July 4th, poses an extraordinary risk for burns from fireworks and the like. Both burns and wounds can range in severity from mild to life-threatening. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
*Identify the four primary causes of burns.
*Identify different types of burns, meeting all of the following objectives:
- Determine whether a burn is a first, second, or third degree burn, according to the symptoms of the burn.
- Administer appropriate first aid to a burn according to severity.
- Know when to seek professional medical attention for a burn.
- Know how to prevent many burns.
*Identify different types of wounds, meeting all of the following objectives:
- Identification of specific types of wounds.
- Identification of symptoms (probable or possible) according to the type of wound.
- Administration of appropriate first aid, according to the type and severity of the wound.
- Know when to seek emergency medical attention for a wound.
