Homeschooling 101

Lesson 8: Having fun!

Developing a School Identity

There are so many interesting things available free to educators on the Internet, you can’t help but sign up for one or two. You glide problem free through the form, filling in the appropriate information, and then, the question hits you like a ton of bricks… “Name of School?”

Naming your homeschool will not only avoid many headaches when requesting “free stuff”, it can also help your kids when the “What school do you go to?” questions comes up.

When you name your homeschool, have fun with it! You can use your last name, the name of your child’s hero, the name of your street… or something completely out of the ordinary!
When it came time to name our homeschool (after the 9 millionth “name of school” question) I decided it needed to be fun, but still sound professional. After all, while “Mom’s the best teacher in the world” (my then four year olds suggestion) might have sounded great to me, but I doubt it would pass as a “real” school name.

After much brainstorming, deciding and re-deciding, we finally settled on a name that has stuck. “The Kaefer Academy” I know, I know. “What in the world is that??” Let me explain.

Kaefer is the German word for “bug”. As a homeschooling family of three boys, we have had more than our share or bugs and other creatures in our house (by choice.) We figured that where there are boys, there are bugs, and frogs, and mud…

Sit down with your kids and come up with a few names for your homeschool. Share what you have decided on with the class.
