Homeschooling 101Lesson 6: Creative solutions for difficult situationsSingle Parent/ Two Income Family HomeschoolingIs it possible to be a single parent, or a two-income family and still homeschool? Yes! (I have grouped single parent and two income family homeschooling together because the basics are the same for both.) The first thing you will need is a reliable person to care for your children while you are at work. If you are a two income family, it might be possible to work different shifts, so that either mom or dad is home with the kids at all times. Being flexible can be a life savor! There is no law that says that school must be done from 8am to 3pm. Homeschooling can be done at any time of the day or night. There have been many days when we have started “school” after dinner! If your kids work well independently and you use a curriculum that lends itself to requiring minimal instruction from the teacher (or the person caring for your children is willing to help them), you can have them accomplish much of the work while you are working as well.
Depending on your job, your employer’s feelings and age of your children, many times your children can accompany you to work. A friend of mine is a high-paid executive, and had a desk put in her office for her daughter. Another friend cleans houses and her children take their work with them and sit at the kitchen table while mom is cleaning.
