Homeschooling 101

Lesson 4: Insider Secrets

Physical Education

For some homeschoolers, physical education consists of an organized sport through the local Y or Parks and Rec. department. For others, it is doing mom’s aerobics tapes with her a couple of times a week. I feel that a “physical education” can incorporate all of those things, and more. How does this couch potato teach PE? Surprisingly enough, I think this is one area where the “content standards” of your state can come in handy. (If your state doesn’t have a content standard” for PE, California gives grade-by-grade lists.)

Now that you know what your state wants your children to know, think about what you want them to know. What are your physical education goals for your children? (Bet you have never thought about them, have you? I know I didn’t, until recently.)

Ours are (in no particular order):

  • Develop Physical Stamina
  • Learn Basic Sport Skills (including rules)
  • Develop Strength
  • Develop Coordination
  • Have Fun!

Using the content standards and your goal list, take a look at some of the web sites below and find the activities you need to accomplish your physical education goals!

How important do you think Physical Education is to your children? Do they have enough physical activity during the day? What can you do to improve their physical health?
