Homeschooling 101Lesson 2: Choosing your CurriculumAfterschoolingSo you have decided that taking on the task of homeschooling full time just isn’t for you. Does that mean you are completely “out of the loop” when it comes to your child’s education? Absolutely not! Not only are there the traditional ways to get involved, there is Afterschooling! Afterschooling is just what it sounds like. Using the time after your child returns home from public or private school to supplement the education they are receiving. There are a few ways you can go about Afterschooling. One way is to supplement what your child is already learning, going more in-depth than time allows in a school setting. For example, if your child is studying the ancients, they are probably learning everything there is to know about the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks but not much on the Celts, Sumerians, Mongols, Incas, and Chinese etc. One of the unfortunate problems that happens in schools is that the class will move on whether your child has mastered the material or not. If Johnny hasn’t grasped multiplication, you can work with him on his multiplication facts at home until he has them down. If reading isn’t your child’s strong point, a review of phonics might be just the thing. Just be prepared… most of the Afterschoolers I know eventually end up homeschooling full time. Once you see how much of an improvement can be made in just a short amount of time, don’t be surprised if you decide there has to be a better way!
