Lesson 6: Trees And Shrubs

Planting Shrubs Correctly

Here is an almost foolproof method for planting new shrubs. As with trees, prepare the planting bed 2 weeks before putting the shrubs in. On planting day, no further feeding will be needed. It is better to buy shrubs bare root or balled in burlap. If you do purchase container shrubs, slip them from their pots and examine the roots and soil. If it is badly rootbound, take a very sharp knife and nick the roots. This “injury” will stimulate new root growth. A soaking in rooting hormone prior to planting will help minimize shock.

Once the hole is dug, place the shrub inside, and make certain it’s level. Begin backfilling the hole using the native soil. When it is a third filled in, tamp the earth down firmly and continue with the process. Stop and make certain the shrub is still sitting upright and level. Once the soil is completely filled in, step down lightly all around the perimeter. (Air pockets in the soil kill shrubs quickly.)

Create a basin around the shrub and fill with water. Once this has drained, mulch around the shrub to help hold in moisture. Within a few days, you will be able to tell whether the shrub is in trouble. It will look wilty and browning may occur. If this occurs, you can try feeding with fish emulsion.

If browning continues, dig the plant up and examine the roots. If they are blackened and mushy, discard the plant and replace. If the roots appear healthy but dry and brittle, try replanting it, making certain no air pockets remain.

Generally, bare root and balled in burlap plants are healthier and much less prone to shock. With both trees and shrubs, it is better to spend a bit more and get healthy plants. Economize on other areas of the garden, but these are focal points and lack of quality will manifest itself in poor growth and a failure to thrive.

Topic of Discussion: Have you ever had difficulties with planting shrubs?
