Lesson 6: Alternative treatments: Non-traditional medicine.Movement TherapiesMovement therapies can be thought of almost like exercise. The most popular movement therapy is yoga, but Tai Chi is also gaining followers. Both emphasize both movement and meditation - the mind-body balance. Both can help relieve pain and stiffness as well as relieving stress. Two other movement therapies involve relearning the way we move. The Alexander technique teaches patients how to reduce the strain on muscles and joints through the proper positioning - very similar to Pellegrino's "Fibronomics." The Feldenkrais method is divided into two parts - one is through group taught lessons concentrating on making movement effortless; the second part is one on one and tries to direct that individual's movement possibilities in ways that will directly and positively affect the central nervous system. Originally this method was used to treat people who suffered from age or strokes but it has expanded to include individuals suffering from all kinds of chronic neuromuscular pain. |
