Lesson 4: Coping strategies - the physical aspects

Coping with Flares

Sometimes our fibro simmers along at a low level so that we feel almost normal. Other times we can barely function. We call those times flares - and the first thing I should stress is that no matter how bad they seem - they do end!

The other important thing - and I can't stress this enough - is not to assume that every bad feeling you get is caused by the fibro. If you experience something new - pain in a new area, fevers, etc. that you've never really connected with fibro before, get to your doctor and have it checked. It could be a more serious problem and you don't want to overlook that.

But assuming you check out OK on other points, extra pain and fatigue indicate that you're in a flare and need to learn to cope with it. See how Mary and Loni manage.

  • Make another list - take inventory of your usual physical activities as of late. Can you identify any changes that might account for the flare? Any new stress? Identifying these can help you to avoid them - and lessen the chances of a flare later.
  • Take aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen - over the counter drugs that will work with your regular medication to reduce pain and lessen inflammation. Suite101.com fibro sufferers talk about the medicines that work for them.
  • Use hot water If you have a hot tub, jump in. Or take a hot soaking bath - this is no time for brisk showers. The soak will help relax strained, tense muscles which almost inevitable accompany pain.
  • Try massage Some people find it too painful, but for those who can a massage can help to ease the pain in those connective tissues.
  • Don't stop moving Lying around usually makes things worse. Do your stretching but on a reduced level. Take slow walks.
  • Use "comfort" devices Many people find that a heating pad or one of those pillows filled with grain that can be heated or refrigerated will help to ease discomfort.
  • Do take it easy. This is not the time to start beating yourself up about things that you're not getting done. That only creates more stress and makes things worse. Recognize that you are in a flare and resign yourself to taking it easy.
