Lebanon
Lebanon is unique among Middle Eastern countries in that it is not dominated by one religion. Its population of 4 million is made up of 60% Muslim, 39% Christian and 1% Other. The Lebanese people are overwhelmingly of Arab origin.
Lebanon has contended with intrigue and competing factions ever since its independence in 1943. Devastated by sectarian fighting in its Civil War, Lebanon has rebuilt with a new system of government meant to reduce conflict. However, terrorist Hezbollah and other militant groups still operate there. Freedoms are fragile in Lebanon and women lack equal rights. Government corruption is common. Currently, with the Arab Spring still reverberating in the region, Lebanon's future path isn't clear. Read more here at Suite 101.
