Late Middle Ages
Late Middle Ages
From 1300 - 1453, the Late Middle Ages witnessed the decline of Church authority through the Avignon papacy, prominent heretics like Wycliffe and Huss, and attempts at reform at a time three popes claimed the right to rule; this period covers the turmoils of the 14th Century which saw the Hundred Years' War and the Black Death or bubonic plague. In Medieval Russia, this period represents the ascendancy of Moscow and the expulsion of the Mongols. The period flows into the Renaissance and Reformation, bridging the late Middle Ages with the early modern period.
