Ireland
Irish History
Of all the countries in the British Isles, Ireland is probably the one which arouses most emotions. A country divided by religion and, since 1922, by a political boundary, its history is marred by bloodshed and strife. Oliver Cromwell and Willaim of Orange are among the English-based rulers to have left their mark on the Emerald Isle .
Ireland's tradition of rebellion may have largely ended after the establishment of the Irish Free state but the struggle between the island's differing cultures continued. Yet over the centuries many Irishmen have played a significant part in British politics, in literature and elsewhere.
