Indy Racing
British driver Dan Wheldon won a thrilling centennial Indy 500, with rookie JR Hildebrand almost literally scraping his car across the line for an incredible second place after crashing in the final turn. However, the 2011 Indy season will be remembered for the untimely death of the Indy champion in the final race of the season, where he was competing for a significant cash prize had he won the race as a non-regular driver for the season. The official inquest found that Wheldon's head had collided with a concrete fence post causing unsurvivable injuries.
