Historical Resources
Any material that contributes to the understanding of the past comprises a historical resource. Manuscripts, records, papers and documents as well as letters, diaries, maps, photographs, illustrations, artifacts, audio and video recordings, and oral accounts provide clues about the past. Historical resources offer interpretations of the past which the researcher analyses and reconstructs to create a historical narrative.
Digitization of archival collections is gaining pace with many major archives having their holdings scanned, digitized and made available online. From rare 4thC manuscripts to 20thC war intelligence documents, more historical resources can now be accessed online by the public than ever before. The problem is not scarcity of resources but knowing where to find them and how to use them!
