Domestic Birds
Domestic Birds
Although most birders pay little attention to domestic birds such as chickens and turkeys, domestication for commercial reasons has worldwide and significant economic impact, not to mention the importance of domestic birds as a food supply. A chicken, after all, is just as much a bird as a Cape May Warbler.
Domestication of the chicken is fascinating history, and the scope of the birds (and bird products)-as-food industry is staggering. On the other hand, problems associated with domestication, such as avian flu and other diseases are equally important. Even holidays (Easter) are associated with domesticated bird products!
