Born to Be an ArtistRead the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » Maureen Fleury - Re: Fun Topic In response to message posted by obeecat:Traute, I love the title of your topic. It is just perfect. I read your article and what you say is very true. I used to freeze in art class because only the "born" artists were nurtured and the others were cast aside. We had to take art when I was in elementary school. I was one of the cast offs. Your expertise and understanding will certainly be an inspiration to all of us. -- posted by Maureen Fleury » Red - art... Traute,Welcome to Youth Korner. Your topic is going to be a very popular place for kids to hang out too. I loved this first article. I was never good at drawing, though my Mom and sister were. Then one time my grade 8 teacher told us that everyone had to draw something for the county fair. We had our choice of a swan or something else. Well, I loved the swan and wanted to draw it, but Just knew I couldn't do it. I would have a terrible drawing and everyone at the fair would see it. I was embarrassed. Mrs. Smith, my teacher, knew that not everyone in her class was a good artist, so she taught us how to draw using a graph. My swan drawing came out beautiful. Mom still has it. I was proud as punch. This instilled in me that there was a way to do anything I wished. I have drawn on this lesson throughout my life. What a great teacher this lady was. I thought you might like to hear this little story, being a former teacher yourself. -- posted by Red » biogardener - Focus I have taught every age group from two years to 88 years, and when I write, I try to reach every age group as well. I have several friends who did not discover their artistic talents until after retirement when they finally had time to devote to what they really wanted to do. One of those friends got her degree in fine art in her seventies after never having attended university when she was young. And as Mary has discovered, you don't have to have a natural ability to draw in order to demonstrate your talents. There are a hundred ways of being creative.Hang around, and you will hear more stories of creativity and discover many ways of exploring your inner self. If you continue to tell me your personal experiences, I will be able to weave them into future articles. I am going to post a preview of the next article at the end of each one to whet your appetite. -- posted by biogardener » Tina_Coruth - wonderful topic! Hi Traute,I finally made it over and what a great surprise to see this wonderful topic. I love your first article and I agree with you completely. All children should be encouraged, because all children are artistic. :-) Tina -- posted by Tina_Coruth » biogardener - children of all ages Yes, all children are artistic, all children of any age. Many people are finding that out after retirement when they finally take time to pursue their dreams of artistic endeavors. Seniors' art classes are very popular in Winnipeg, and some of my senior friends who have barely begun with their art work are now winning prizes and selling their work.-- posted by biogardener » thebattwoman - Re: wonderful topic! Tina, how are you?? I've missed you! Sorry Traute, I hope you don't mind me using your space to say hello to one of my favorite people?-- posted by thebattwoman » CrabApple - Young at Art Traute, I loved this article. I haven't looked up anything on Suite 101 for at least 8 months. This was a wonderful start again for me. Thanks for your reply to my message the other day (Claire from Australia).I love painting and have done it all my life (63 years young). My mother encouraged me until I was a teenager. She realized that I was serious I now paint in my retirement and belong to a local art society. I also have a group of friends who come to paint in my studio each Wednesday. I show my work in local and further afield exhibitions and have an exhibition with my sister and friends once a year. I have my studio open to the public. I don't do pottery at the moment, because of an illness, but I am going to have a go at Mosaics and sculpture with some material. Crabapple -- posted by CrabApple » biogardener - Re Crabapple's posting Your story sounds almost identical to mine, except that I would never have gotten stuck in an office job even for a day. I can't even look up a telephone number in the phone book and get it right, and the one time when I tried to balance a cash register, people thought I was stealing, because I can never count anything correctly, even though I am a wizzard at mathematics.I got into art in a bigger way after I got disabled in a car accident 20 years ago at age 48. I took some free watercolor classes and my teacher encouraged me to enter my work in some competitions. Well, I won first prize in one and second prize in another one in one month. Pottery was my favorite art. This gardener soul of mine got hooked on it the first time I plucked some clay from a steep embankment at Lake Winnipeg and got elbow-deep in clay while making some pots. I could go to art school for free now, because in Manitoba, university classes are free to seniors of 65 years and older, but I don't want to spend half a day on the bus every day, and we have so many great opportunities of excellent classes all over town. I do take part in those at least once a week. That way, I get to try all kinds of media and work with other people who love art as much as I do. -- posted by biogardener » fredah - Re Crabapple's posting In response to Re Crabapple's posting posted by biogardener:I'm new to this site and actually found you by Googling "watercolour classes Winnipeg." I'm interested in the "excellent classes all over town." I live in Kenora but am in the city almost once a week so distance isn't an issue. I'd LOVE to find a class environment for learning to paint watercolours. I took my first watercolour class in June in Nashville at the Society of Decorative Painters convention and realized that intimidating as it is, I really like this medium. Rather than struggling on my own and with a book, I'd prefer a class setting. Any information you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks... -- posted by fredah « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
