Alissa,
Great Idea! Now do you have a contest for writers who are not published? Limiting your contest to already published authors seems counterproductive to me. The point of most contests is to encourage people to write and get their material seen by people who can critique their work and give UN-published authors a chance for publication. By limiting your contest to already published authors you are actually discouraging those authors who would benefit most from it. I feel the fair thing to do is open the contest to anybody who writes science fiction, published or not, otherwise you create a Catch-22 environment where the only way a writer can get a chance to be published is to already be published.

I agree with Geoff. What is the point behind having a contest only for published writers? The only way to win the contest and be published is to already be a successful published science fiction writer. This only benefits those who are already published by getting them more publicity for their already published work.

Geoff,

Don't worry - a contest for unpublished writers is in the works.

I decided to make this contest for published writers, in the hopes that those who had not yet broken into print would take the opportunity to explore the Science Fiction Market Listing page (http://www.suite101.com/topic_page.cfm/1... and submit to some of the great ezines and magazines there. A lot of the smaller ezines are eager to publish new writers, and it's a great way for beginning writers to "get published."

But, if you are not yet motivated to submit your work to some of these 'zines, don't worry a more traditional short story contest will be coming soon.

Take care,
Alissa Grosso

Hi may I join in. Its interesting that the unpublished writers want their own competion, but I would also agree, the competions should be for both published and unpublished at the same time. The unpublished will be recognised and the published who have worked hard enough to find a publisher will get a much needed extra boost. There are no short cuts and being published only comes from hard work, many phone calls, lots of rejections, entering competions can seem like a very small glimmer of light at the end of a very long dark tunnel. However when you get published you have to work just as hard to get the work into the stores, its no good expecting the publisher to do everything. Lets have an open contest and may the best book win, published or not.
