» forties111 - Manstein (11th Army) lost 300'000 (!) not 24'000 at noted !

topic contains some information that is not true:

"..The Battle of Sevastopol began immediately thereafter."

That is not true. =The Nazi armies, which entered Crimea on November 30-31, 1941, attempted to straight off take possession of Sevastopol, but these attempts were stopped!

".. Fierce Soviet resistance in the city lasted until July 4th.By the time the battle was over some 90,000 Soviet soldiers were taken prisoner and total Soviet losses during the siege and subsequent battle of Sevastopol were estimated at more than 200,000. In contrast, 11th Army suffered about 24,000 casualties. "

True:
= Control of this strategic point was hotly contested until late in the evening of June 30th when Russian leadership ordered a general retreat the Straleskaya bay and cape Chersonese where until July 4th the Russian army made it's last heroic stand, although scattered fighting continued until July 9th. The defense of Sevastopol lasted 250 days. In struggle for Sevastopol the Nazis (11th army) lost almost 300,000 soldiers dead and injured.

".. Manstein was promoted to Field Marshal on the basis of the Crimean campaign, particularly the capture of Sevastopol, and he was promptly sent north, along with elements of 11th Army, to Leningrad. The German experience at Sevastopol demonstrated that even a determined defense in a fortified city could not withstand a well coordinated attack by their forces."

True:
=In addition, the siege infringed on the plans of the German general staff by holding up many soldiers that the Germans desperately needed on the southern wing of the Soviet-German front.

Germans lost in Sevastopol dead 7 of 10 of all troops on eastern front during ww2 !!!

SOMEONE SHOULD CHANGE IT BECAUSE TOPIC SOUNDS dilentant and OFFENSIVE!!

Thank you.

Agree with you. The author of this series of WWII articles is painfully naive and undereducated and seems to have a secret admiration of Hitler in spite of his colossal blunders.

May I ask where you got your information from? I only found the mentioned number of ~24000 German casualties.

Hiii -- my second cousin lives in Sevastopol and my grandfather lived there some time shortly before the war! Frankly I have no idea about the article you were commenting on because I haven't read it yet, but hey you're like my fellow countryman. Visit my topic (Russia)! And thanks for correcting this -- so many people online say such crazy things about us in the Second World War. You should read some of the comments about Russians not being the victims of the Nazis because Stalin killed so many of us and was a monster just like Hitler. Now does that make sense to you? It doesn't to me. Oh well, hope to see ya read my articles sometime smile

Mr. Yanko:

Could you tell me where I can find more information on Ludmilla Pavlichenko, the Soviet sniper who was involved at the Battle of Sevastopol? I am a professor in the US and I am trying to write an article on her. Thank you.
