It was then asked to translate the resulting Chinese statement back into English. The computer produced these words: "invisible idiot." -- posted by GKCruey » rkhen - Yes, Greg, I'd heard that one. Computers do a lot of funny stuff Yes, Greg, I'd heard that one. Computers do a lot of funny stuff, because they're basically dumb. (Compared to human brains, that is.) Another great computer quote was from a machine being developed by an artificial intelligence program. It scans all the databases in the world, stores the info and attempts to respond logically. At one point it made the following observation: "Most people are famous or dead." Might I infer that developing sense of irony is a benchmark in the evolution of intelligence?-- posted by rkhen » Dubh_Sidhe - Bi-LIngual Many years ago, in San Francisco, as a first year teacher, my principal asked me if I would take on a difficult assignment. Being eager to conquor the world, I agreed to accept a third grade class with 35 students, of which roughly more than half spoke Spanish. Why were they in the third grade if they were unable to read English? I do not know! To make a long, but interesting story, short--I kicked out the Spanish (English ONLY spoken in MY room), got my husband involved (his first language was Spanish) with the parents to teach them English and I am here to tell you that by the end of the school year every Spanish speaking child in my class was reading at grade level! Maybe the Soyuz-English escapade was good--maybe not. Hemm. Perhaps converting to ALL English is what got them back to Earth! Tee! Hee!I enjoyed your article though, and was not previously aware of the language problem encountered there. It does seem the world is sort of a "Tower of Babel" in language and lack of cooperation. I will be a regular visitor and hope you will hop over to "Folklore" (under humanities) and visit Lady Dubh Sidhe and all of the little people. -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
