» bookidea - Something to watch out for

Hi all!

Earlier posts at this site have raised the question: What's the difference between a work-at-home business and a work-at-home opportunity? I've addressed this in previous posts, but wanted to add something more specific here today.

I just deleted a message today about an "opportunity" that promised you could make $6,000 in a matter of days from a $6 investment. WARNING SIGN NO. 1: Beware of any opportunity that guarantees you can get rich quick. While people do become millionaires overnight occasionally by a wise investment, an inheritance, a lucky buyout, etc., this isn't usually the case with an "opportunity." The only one getting rich quick is the person selling the opportunity.

WARNING SIGN NO. 2: Beware of any opportunity (as the one I deleted did) that involves sending $1 to several people on a list, then sending out that same list with your name attached at the bottom in the expectation that other people will send you money in the same way. This is one of the oldest bad business opportunities in the world -- it's called a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes can benefit the people at the very top of the list -- the ones who start the pyramid -- but the further down the list you go, the greater your chances of getting absolutely nothing (or worse, depending upon the type of scheme -- losing your shirt).

These types of opportunities have been around for years, but they're even more popular now thanks to the Internet and the ease of reaching thousands of people around the world. Please, don't fall for these schemes -- a real and profitable business requires real effort and knowledge. Don't let others take advantage of you!

A word of warning from your Working at Home editor.

Oh, one more note -- if you'll read Suite101.com's posting etiquette and policies, you'll find that such "get-rich-quick-scheme" posts are also against the rules.

Thanks everyone!
