» themos100 - Men and books

Sure, but I'm a voracious male reader. I spend too much money on books, go to the library often twice a week. I'm in a reading circle, and also visit many website devoted to literature, and subscribe to Granta magazine. While more common in women I suspect I'm not alone in my addiction as a male.

Point taken. I think I see a new book idea - perhaps you should consider writing "Men Who Love Books Too Much" as a companion. Or maybe we should consider forming an international 12 Step Program for those who spend too much money or time on books - but then we'd have to want to end our addiction and I have no interest in that. A life without reading - not to be contemplated. Granta magazine is a wonderful magazine. I had a subscription at one time, but had to cut back on my subscriptions for awhile. But, I still pick it up from time to time at the book store.

I imagine Suite101 has many "people who love books too much." Although, I did have a small problem with the title - how CAN you love books too much?! I'm probably in denial. Thanks for your comment - thanks for taking the time.

Read on.

I think for a twelve step program to work you've to to want to give up. I fell badly today. A bookshop I passed in London had a four for the price of one offer on so I bought "Girl with a Pearl Earing" (Tracy Chevalier), "The Wrong Boy" (Willy Russell), "Martha Peake" (Patrick McGrath) and "Alias Grace" (Margaret Attwood - my reading circle's choice). (sigh). Maybe twelve steps wouldn't be such a bad idea.

So much to read, so little time! And it never ends - I've added your list of books to my reading list (actually the list is almost a book -will I ever be able to read all?). I'm quite lucky because I have access to a wonderful library system, so I have been purposely avoiding bookstores for awhile and checking my local library. (Easier on the budget and almost as much fun.) However, I have a small problem with that, I can't underline passages or pull it from the shelf of my home library to reread passages when I want. So I now have to start a "book journal" so I can jot down particularly wonderful lines, paragraphs, etc. Yes, you're right - a 12 Step Program needs the right motivation - we readers would have to want to end our reading addiction and all I want is more money to spend on books; I certainly don't want to stop reading.
