I Don't Hate Men!Read the article this discussion is about

» Terrie_Bittner - I really enjoyed this article, Nancy. I really enjoyed this article, Nancy. I am taking an independent study course on American Women's History through 1860. Too many of the authors took the theme of "Women have had a terrible history and it's all mens' fault!" They blame everything on men, ignoring the fact that many women were quite content with their lives, and when they weren't, they banded together to change it. It's always refreshing to get someone like Norton, who doesn't spend a large portion of her book bashing men. Actually, that doesn't seem like a very feminist approach to me at all-it makes women seem so helpless, and they weren't. I read that after the Revolution, many women who ran the businesses while their husbands fought refused to return them after the war. They demanded partnership marriages. I do think it's wise to remind women that it's okay to celebrate womenhood without trashing men in the process. As a happily married woman who also has a son, I'm clearly not a man-hater! I remember my son, at age four, watching a program and suddenly running out of the room in tears at the male-bashing jokes on the program. It's too bad some women think that is necessary in order to elevate women. Great article!-- posted by Terrie_Bittner » jerrib - I was just thinking about this issue today, Nancy This needs to be said, and I'm proud you said it. There is a distinct image when a person says they are a feminist that they don't like men. You have straightened out that misinformation that pops into folks' heads if they take the time to think about it.This is a granite statement that needs to be heard. Glad you said it. Cheers for you! Jerri -- posted by jerrib » Sallymoore - The sad truth is that feminist are anti-male. The sad truth is that feminist are anti-male! I use to be proud to say I was a feminist but I have not been able to say that for a very long time. So are a lot area's that women have a disadvantage, but now, there is also alot of areas in which men have a disadvantage. Acording to the United States Department of Justice, in a divorce, mothers get custody of the children 90% of the time. Accouding the USDOJ, 53% of men do not pay child support so we put a demeaning label on them "Dead Beat Dad's" The #1 reason giving by these "Dead Beat Dad's" for not paying child support, no access to their children. According tro the USDOJ 63% of mothers ordered by the courts to allow visitation of the father do so only in part or not at all. Yet we still expect the men to keep paying the child support payment.Matel came out with a speaking Barbi doll and one of the things it said was "Math is hard" The feminist world went into action, they sent letters of protest, the threaten law suits and boycotts until 6 months later Matel agree to recall ALL the dolls. I happen to agree with that actions. Anther company put out the power puff dolls in which of of the dolls say "Boys are dumb" Its doesn't say that a subject boys will be taking in school will be hard, but it comes right out and says "Boys are dumb" I was very sadden to see not one word from the feminist community. This doll has been on the market now for over 2 years and not one word. 35,000 men died last year for prostate cancer, 45,000 women died of breast cancer last year, just 7% more, yet breast cancer gets almost 7 time more federally funded research dollars the prostate cancer. Is this gender equality? I was at a National Organization for Women meeting 3 years ago and someone mentions one of this topics and the represented of NOW said "Why should NOW waist there recourse on mens issue" I thought it was interesting that she used the work "waist". I though we where fighting for gender equity? So if that is indeed the case then who could we call it a "waist" to change laws that hurt men? The bottom line is feminist are interested in changing laws ONLY in the area in which women have a disadvantage. This is just a few of the disadvantages men face, that does not belittle those disadvantage that women face. In the area where men have a disadvantage, there has been not one single feminist group anywhere in the country that has spoken out in support of men. The plain truth is that there is alot of area's men have a very real disadvantage, this does not demean thoughts areas where women are at a disadvantage. This would explain why so many men that once use to proudly support the feminist movement, has since dropped out. That would also explain the "Men's movement" Because men have finely (and hopefully not to late) realized that the feminist will not do anything to improve their situation, and indeed if they do not do something soon will end up in a very bad situation. You had have to say "I hate to men" to be and do thing that hurt men. I am not ashamed to be a woman, and I still believe there are a lot of things that need to be address, but until we start addressing inequality of BOTH men and women will never truly have gender equality.
