I never thought of any of our Great Lakes states as having any prairie history until Nature Conservancy material told about preserving and restoring prairie in Michigan -- our southwest corner, I think. Now that awareness is growing, efforts are growing, and maybe your "silver lining" story could be repeated for other closed bases. Thank you for informing us.

I have a friend who does prairie restoration for private homes. Very interesting that they study waht originally grew in that prairie and try to replicate it. They had me review and edit their brochure one time.

Many new high schools in Wisconsin are implementing grasslands/prairie conservation in their plans. Maybe this is legislated, I don't know. My high school, Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton, set aside a number of acres on its new campus for wetland/prairie restoration.

We so often think the only kind of prairie is the type found in the Plains states, but there are many types and the Great Lakes states have plenty of those.

John,
We know we cannot restore all of the prairie, but if we can preserve or restore even small bits of it what a wonderful legacy for our children and grandchildren.
