» Marge_Talt - You don't forget!

You're so right, Mel, you never forget your first encounter with a Luna.

Mine was in the mountains of North Carolina some thirty years ago. I was attending a 6 week school in the woods and one got into my room...I wanted to keep it, it was so lovely, but opened the window and let it go rather than see it beat itself to smitherines on the screen.

I used to see them on our property, years ago...in fact, one of my most thrilling moments was holding one in my hand that had just emerged from the crysalis, and watching its wings pump up.....incredible.

I have not seen one for at least ten years. Have blamed this on our county's aerial sprayin program against gypsy moths...yet, we seem to have hundreds of other kinds of moths about. Have you any clues on why they should suddenly seem to disappear??

I keep hoping each year that this will be the year I see one again.

Thanks for the memories! Not to mention all the excellent info. on these beautiful critters.

Marge, have you thought about buying a few egg cases and raising your own? I haven't tried this for myself, though the number of websites I'm finding that talk about "home grown" specialty insects (mantises, butterflies, moths) are tempting me!!

I love lunas so much. They are so gracefull and pretty. I think I know why they are disappearing. I herd they were getting zapped on street lights. sparrows also love them for brunch.

I recently found a moth on my garage that i belive to be a luna, i have looked up pictures, and the luna closly matches the way this one looks. It is green, with pink at the top of its wings and 2 little pink "eyes". It was a white furry body, and intena that look like little leaves. It it a luna? I have never seen a moth this big, or this color, im just curious about it.

» Carol Wallace - None here

I have never seen a luna moth. Like the Northern Lights, it's one of those phenomenon I keep hoping to see.

» bek79 - luna moth encounter

I had never heard of a luna moth before. I was having a cigarette out side of work (in a woodsy area in R.I.) and a shadow was cast on the streetlight. I swear I thought I was looking at a new species of bat or an albino one or something.. My co-worker and I got closer...WOW!!! from looking around on the net I placed this weird creature..It was a huge luna moth! What a fascinating creature!

I am new to this forum and wish I knew if we could post pictures. I found a beautiful Luna moth yesterday clinging to an impatient leaf on my porch. I took some really nice pictures of her. Such a nice surprise!

» indsumkim - Luna Moth

I just "happened" upon this site today. I have a photo of a gardening luna moth that I would love to post. My dad passed away on April 6, 2000 and his memorial service was on April 13, 2000 at 11am. When we went outside afterward, a luna moth (male) landed on my dad's memorial card that my niece was holding. This was in broad daylight about noon. So wild! Thanks, Kim
