» Carol Wallace - There must be tons of these imposters!

I've never mistaken my imposters for dandelions but I have been amazed at how many of the things that grow wild on our property have dandelion-like flowers. Thanks fo rhelping me to identify a few.

Hi Carol...

Yeah! The dandelion flower design must be a popular model, huh? The acupuncturist really did think all yellow flowers that appeared in the lawn and so on were simply dandelions. Yikes!!

Even single-layer petaled ones?

Funny - I grew up without much exposure to weeds - one advantage, I guess, of the tiny suburban yard that it was easy to keep well manicured. I was well acquainted with the dandelion because it was the chief enemy. Well enpough so that when I moved to this huge property with a lot of uncultivated areas I recognized that all these other yellow flowers were different and so had to be something else. Your acupuncturist must not have spent a lot of time playing outside - or her family wasn't in to lawm care. ;-)

But to this day, even after buying several books to help me, I haven't been able to identify half my "weeds." Some I've learned about ald learned to love (in moderation) like jewel weed. With others, it's annual war.

But your photos were a big help for me in sorting out some of my yard's population.

Yeah Carol,

My mom used to arm me with a prong thingie...like a fork at the end of a handle. My mission: get those dandelions...

...when we finally bought our own home, it was in a small rural village, so manicured lawns were a rumor...a suburban extravagance...what city folks did. Mix in my laziness and voila! "weeds" galore.

I was never a tidy gardener either, so much of our yard became a native/natural "prairie", and boy did I learn my "weeds" then.

With 'em ol' dandelions, well, they do provide early spring butterflies with a nectar source, something hard to find at that time. And in the autumn we dug up roots and roasted 'em just like chicory, and added 'em to hot chocolate and coffee.

Ya know, that natural/native "prairie" we had rapidly became a kinda eden for insects and birds and so on, stuff I never woulda had in the yard otherwise. The cultivated flowers and stuff were for us humans...

...where those photos are concerned, well, I admit it, I rarely photo dandelion look-alike wildflowers 'cause they...well...look like dandelions... Fair weather wildflower lover, huh?

Happy Gardening!

» lindahlis - Wedding Flowers???

So dandelions are my favorite flower and it was nice to see that there are many other flowers that look like dandelions. So I wanted these flowers for my wedding, but was wondering if it would be weird or not. And if there were other flowers somewhat similar, but did not look to weed like?

...dandelions for your wedding flowers ... it is unusual. I like it!!!

There is no shortage of flowers that look like dandelions, or near enough that most folks can't tell the difference.

How are you planning to use 'em? On tables? Something you would carry? Being hollow-stemmed, I'm not sure how well they will hold up. They would have a better chance in water in vases...

And being the unusual choice it is; where would ya get 'em? That hardly seems fair, but I'm not sure you can order anything that looks like dandelions, but what do I know?

Ya may have to gather yer own dandelions and dandelion look-alikes, which would be interesting because they come in different sizes. You can trim the foliage as ya see fit, if they look too weedy...

...and I like dandelions, or maybe more to the point, I have nothing against 'em. The flowers are bright and sunny, and are a source of nectar for butterflies that emerge early, before most other stuff has bloomed yet.

Young dandelion greens can be used in salads. THe roots can be roasted and used, like chicory, in coffee or even hot chocolate...

And there's dandelion wine...

...dandelions in a wedding. Yep, I definitely like it...
