In response to message posted by LadyKelien:

This was one of the first articles I wrote when I was applying for Suite101. It's something that isn't discussed much in the Pagan community, particularly with new folk, who swing between the extremes of "I must tell everyone I know about my new religion!" and "Oh god, if I tell someone everyone will leave me and bad stuff will happen!"

I'd like to do a follow-up piece at some point about "coming out" to those close to you. I've seen lots of posts from newbie teens who are absolutely scared to death to tell their parents, and I simply cannot imagine that every parent on the planet besides my two are that intolerant towards their own children. Of course, I'm only getting the teen's POV, too.

Oh, and next year tell your son to tell folks that historians suspect Jesus was not born in December at all. I don't have references on hand, but there's been some interesting work done on determining when Jesus was actually born going on clues from the Bible (the census, the Star, and the Magis' journey).

Karen =)
