» fsd - Bushwacking

After climbing to Mts. Flume and Liberty and/or Mt. Lincoln from the Kancamagus, I'ld like to head directly east to Owl's Head. What I would like to know is how reasonable is it to attempt to descend the east slope down from Owl's Head to Franconia Brook Trail. The trail guide only describes an ascent of Owl's Head from the Lincoln Brook Trail. Next I would be hiking toward W. Bond. Thanks for any input on such a route. FSD

Howdy, FSD!

If I'm right from your subject line, you're looking to bushwack off the Owl's Head summit. If that's accurate, I hesitate to tell you if this is reasonable since I've never gone that particular route and it's not described in the White Mountain Guide. From the topo map, it looks as though you would encounter a steep drop from the 4,000 foot-3,000 foot descent off the eastern slope.

I'd recommend that you post a note on the AMC's Hiker Journal bulletin board: http://www.outdoors.org/bbs/hiker-journal

Another good resource is David Metsky and his White Mountain Server: http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/whites

Good luck and happy hiking!
Lisa

I have been up & down the E side. I think it is the easier winter route. Stay in the gully as the ridge is thicker. For further questions, try the Q&A Forum at ViewsFromTheTop.com

There is a greater discussion of 4000-footer bushwhacks (and a good distance guide to the trails) at home.earthlink.net/~ellozy

Both of these links probably belong on this site, Alpinista

Are you planning on bushwacking from the Franconia Ridge Trail to Lincoln Brook trail? Start somewhere between Mts. Liberty and Lincoln ahd head east? I'd like to do the same, but don't know if it is reasonable. Have you gotten any replys on doing this?

The usual route (which I haven't done personally) is to go down the large slide between Lafayette and Liberty
