» SeaWolf32055 - The ultimate sadness

The ultimate sadness is that these beautiful and magnificent animals are threatened more and more every day. They possess such advanced qualities that us fellow humans only dream of having. They are very peaceful, but will defend their family with their lives. Yet most of us do not see their true intelligence. I have caught myself in tears simply by watching them. They show such grace and happiness that we all long to feel. You can look into their eyes and tell the intelligence and kindness, but like all of us who feel threatened, they will defend theirselves, and why shouldn't they. Look at what we have been doing for centuries, destroying, being "takers", never taking the time to give more than you take. What about all of the other stories where other dolphins have saved swimmers by bringing children that have strayed too far from the beach and were helpless to the elements of nature, yet their selfless act to save the little bor or girl from definite demose. They did not have to do that. And if they were just stupid "fish", then why did they save him or her. A unintelligent "fish" would have the ability to save a child, or wouldn't understand that the little child couldn't swim on their own. I am one that will devote my entire life to animals, above and under the ocean. i will give my life for any of them. They deserve at least that much. Have people not heard of dolphins protecting swimmers from sharks. Ramming the sharks in the gills to deter the shark from hunting the swimmer. Think of that. Dolphins being able to deter a shark: the apex predator of the ocean. That is something evenwe cannot do, aside from killing the shark. Even then, sharks are misunderstood too. Sharks do not have the ability to sense with hands or feet. their senses are by taste. Most shark bites bo not end in fatality, simply because apparently we are not meaty enough for them, or maybe we just taste bad, nonetheless they usually don't eat us. My message is simple, when we enter their realm, we have to respect that delicate balance that they have created, not abuse. I ask this of everyone that reads this. Please do this for me. The skeptics have no clue, and show their ignorance in their statments. Join the few people in saveing our valueable and precious friends, or if you will..." family" in the ocean. They need us now more thatn ever. Its now time for us to show our "INTELLIGENCE". I thank anyone who has taken this time to read this food for thought and regard anyone who supports this cause with the highest respect.
Brian

» VerboseMermaid - A few incidents does not an entire reputation make, and dolphins

A few incidents does not an entire reputation make, and dolphins have been known as gentle, intelligent creatures for centuries. If the more ignorant sects of the population choose to believe the negative, that is their prerogative; as a whole species, dolphins remain the most deserving of reverence.

I agree. If dolphins are becoming agressive, then we should be taking a step back to look at our own actions. We humans appear bent on destroying nature, so it doesn't surprise me that dolphins may be learning to be offensive so that they don't wind up needing to become defensive.

Dolphins are killer beasts. They should be destroyed. Think of that poor little girl who nearly lost her hand. Have you no consideration for your fellow human being. I believe you should have been born an crustacean. It is all a load of nonsense anyway that dolphins are so intelligent. What's the proof?

If watching dolphins can make you cry then anything can.

Killer beasts?!!!! You speak through ignorance! It's obvious you haven't read anything on Dolphins. The Dolphin may have not been feeling well or was probably in a bad mood (just like you). I believe that if the dolphin wanted to really harm her he could have torn her arm off!

Ahh! Another thing, the unpleasantness tone in your words reflects the unhappiness in your life. Cheer up!

» packlightly - you are so ignorant

in response to Joe90:
for your information, there is plenty of proof that dolphins are intelligent creatures (they are probably smarter than you) their brains develop more quickly than ours and they can learn in 20 seconds what it takes a chimp to learn in a month! and chimps have always been thought to be the most intelligent creature besides homo sapiens. dolphins have their own language (delphinese) and have been known to perform experiments on humans trying to do experiments on them! if they had hands like us they would probably have a civilization more advanced than ours. until we can learn to accept and "tolerate" them as they tolerate us, they are the more intelligent creatures.
like all animals, they become aggressive when they are bothered. dogs bite people and the result can be a lot worse than what happened to that girl, should we get rid of dogs? and while we're at it, let's just get rid of all animals cause ONE person MIGHT get hurt. and since humans sometimes express their emotions violently, let's all kill ourselves too.
you shouldn't say things like that about something you don't understand and obviously don't know about.

if u really think that dolphins r not intelligent then mayb you should read this.

"Using a mind probe set in the brain, which when stimulated with an electrical current gave the dolphin a rewarding sensation, Dr. Lilly set up a switch where Dolphin #6 could reward himself by pushing a lever. "While I was assembling it, I noticed that the dolphin was closely watching what I was doing. Almost before I could finish assembling and placing the rods necessary to push the switch (which was out of the water above the animal), the dolphin started pushing on the rod. By the time the switch was connected to the rest of the apparatus he had learned the proper way to push it."6
There was no random or apparent accidental contacts before the dolphin learned how. The same thing happened with three different dolphins. They seemed to anticipate the purpose of the switch. Probably from seeing him push it and connecting the push to the reward. Dr. Lilly had used this same technique on monkeys and made the statement that it usually took a chimp about 100 random tries before he learned to push the button, and then a few more to learn how to push the button.

Dr. Lilly was attempting to make Dolphin #8 whistle a burst of a given pitch, duration and intensity in order to obtain a reward. The dolphin quickly caught on. Every time he whistled his blowhole would move and a whistle would be emitted. Then Dr. Lilly noticed that the dolphin had added a new rule to the game. He was raising the pitch of each subsequent whistle. Suddenly, the blowhole twitched, but no sound. He had passed our hearing range. No sound-- no reward. Dolphin #8 emitted two more supersonic twitches and the third was hearable. From that time on he did not go out of Dr. Lilly's acoustic range. The Dolphin had determined what his hearing range was and stayed within it."

I would like to know if you are for or aganist the death penelty. If you are not than I know exactly what kind of person you are. Yes it is sad that the little girl had her hand bit. however she did not loose her hand did she? And to say that dolphins aren't intelligent, what planet did you come off of. If you read, watched any type of documents on them you would realize exactly how smart these animals really are. you are more than likely the type of person that thinks humans are the most intelligent and the only intelligent being on this planet. Which is all fine and dandy except for the part where there are still ignorant and stupid people like yourself, and half the world continues to rage war, we blunder, rape, destroy, and do all kinds of stupid things. Animals sometimes don't comprehend the difference between right and wrong. It's not their nature. But we do, and we still do these horrible things to each other. Now whose dumber. You know dolphins are even better parents than most human beings. The next time you decide to open your mouth make sure you know what you're talking about.
